Words For Courageous Living

Etc. Page – God's Word91:1(psalm)

"He who dwells in the shelter of the most high will
rest in the shadow of the Almigity. I will
say of the Lord, He is my refuge and
my fortress, my God in whom I trust"

LIONS

There is a reason for the use of the word (in symbol) and the actual animal (in events)- LION in the Bible.

They are the most powerful, daring and impressive of all carnivorous animals. They are also the most magnificent in appearance and some say awful in their voice. A full grown Asiatic lion weighs above 450 pounds and the African lion above 500 pounds. In Asia the lion rarely measures more than 9 1/2 feet from nose to end of tail. The African ones are considerably larger and they have much more mane. They live around 50 years. They were very common in Syria and naturally supplied many images in the language of the people, consequently they are many references in the poetical language of scripture. And there are a few passages where it is actually a recorded historical incident.

The lion was the ancient symbol of the tribe of Judah. The symbol of strength, courage and sovereignity. It also represented the royal house of David. Lions are mentioned in the Bible for their strength, boldness, ferocity (for us a slant toward unbearably intense) and stealth - secret action, as a thief in something stolen. I see Words for Courageous Living providing a basic for the Christian to have strength, boldness and being intense toward their being a child of God plus the coming against the one who has stolen from us, namely Satan.

As it is said of David's warriors (1 Chr. 12:8) that their "faces were like the faces of lions." Figures of lions were used in the decorations of Solomon's temple and throne. Since we make up the "house of God" we can be as lions in nature, attitude and action. I want to motivate you to this end. Let us see in the lion these implication and challenges for our "courageous living".

First- God is compared to a lion in his threatenings, judgments and chastisements. (Hos. 5:14; Amos 1:2, 3:8) In this I see that as a Christian we are responsible to admonish in love a brother who is not representing Jesus in a positive way. Take Peter in his rebuke of Ananias and Sapphira as an example.

Second - Jesus is "the lion of the tribe of Judah" (Rev. 5:5) descending from Judah in respect of his manhood. He as the almighty "awakener" and "conqueror" of souls. This reference is found nowhere else in Scripture, but it is not difficult to see its usage. The lion is the king of beasts, the monarch of the forest and then becomes an emblem of one of kingly authority and power. The reference is in Genesis (49:9) "Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion." Jesus was of the Tribe of Judah. So the term would connect him in John's eyes with prophecy and would suggest to him the idea of His being a ruler or having dominion. (In the Revelation context, there is seen the power of breaking the seals given to Jesus.)

Third - The church is likened to a "lion" with strengthen of God. She (and remember, we are the church) overcomes and is (should be) terrible - maybe that is a strong word - to all that oppose her. (Micah 5:8) The church is like the lion in the sheepfold of the world. Her ministers - (on the sign in front of our church it states: Ministers - the congregation) So, you being her ministers should be as they were in early days like "lions" - bold, courageous and active in their work. As a result of that they conquered multitudes for Christ. We are told in Prov. 28:1b, "...the righteous are as bold as a lion." That is why Words for Courageous Living came into being so that through trials, difficulties and all kinds of circumstances, the Christian as a lion can "roar" through them with Jesus, having courage, strength and boldness as the situations demands. Do I hear a "praise roar" for Jesus?
